Deep structural inequalities in health continue to represent one of the most persistent challenges of contemporary society, and recent crises, such as the COVID-19 pandemic, have highlighted the urgent need for innovative research and action. In this context, the Great Leap project, aligned with the COST Mission, proposes a multidisciplinary and historical approach to analysing the roots and determinants of health inequalities at both European and global levels. The project aims to develop an international research network that brings together expertise from history, social sciences, life sciences, and epidemiology, with the goal of creating the first internationally comparable, individual-level dataset on historical causes of death. In addition, the project seeks to develop innovative analytical tools and to generate knowledge that is relevant to current public health policies and practices. Finally, based on a diverse and gender-balanced structure, with strong participation from Inclusiveness Target Countries (ITCs) and early-career researchers, The Great Leap aims to provide innovative perspectives on the historical mechanisms that have shaped, and continue to shape, health inequalities, thereby contributing to the development of more equitable policies for future generations.

Babeș-Bolyai University, Centre for Population Studies, Romania, is part of this project through its involvement in the Management Committee, within the Leadership and the Working Groups and Membership sections.
